The active cases of Covid-19 in India on Saturday exceeded the 3,000 level and rose to 3,395, with the top number of infections being reported from Kerala at 1,336 followed by Maharashtra and Delhi, Union health ministry data released today revealed.
First Time in Over Two Years
This is likely the first time in more than two years that India’s active Covid case count has crossed the 3,000 level.
Four deaths were reported in the country in the past 24 hours, one each from Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, as per the figures made public on Saturday.
State-Wise Breakdown of Active Cases of Covid
Maharashtra has 467 cases, Delhi 375, Gujarat 265, Karnataka 234, West Bengal 205, Tamil Nadu 185 and Uttar Pradesh 117 cases.
There were 257 cases active in the nation on May 22. The number increased to 1,010 by May 26 and to 3,395 on Saturday. In the past 24 hours, 685 new cases and four deaths have been reported, as per the data.
Last Surge Was in April 2023
The nation had last exceeded 3,000 active cases on April 1, 2023, with the case burden at 3,084, based on a Worldometer index of Covid-19 cases.
“We have been closely monitoring the situation. At this moment, overall, we should monitor, be vigilant but there is no cause to worry,” the Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr Rajiv Behl said, as quoted by PTI.
Omicron Subvariants of Covid Detected
Four subvariants of Omicron, LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1, have been detected, the first three being more common in the caseload, said Behl.
Five individuals have lost their lives in Kerala due to Covid. However, the majority of deaths in January 2025 have occurred in Maharashtra, with a total of 7 individuals who have passed away. A total of 22 deaths have occurred in all the states combined. From January 2025, a total of 1,170 individuals have either been cured or discharged for Covid.
