The Congress party has announced Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election in Telangana. The nomination was confirmed in a press release from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal stated that the Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, has approved Singhvi’s candidacy for the Council of States seat from Telangana.
Singhvi, who previously lost the Rajya Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh earlier this year, will now contest the Telangana bypoll. The Election Commission of India has scheduled the polling for September 3.
The by-election was called to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of former BRS MP K Keshava Rao, who recently rejoined the Congress. Keshava Rao, a former chief of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, had resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 4. He was a member of the Congress before joining the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), now Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), in 2013, and has now returned to the Congress after more than a decade.
