The Congress Party launched a wave of protests across India soon after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. Senior Congress leaders swiftly took to the streets, calling the move a politically motivated attack on the opposition.
Police Detain Congress Leaders in Delhi
In Delhi, police detained several Congress leaders as they attempted to breach security barricades near the party’s national headquarters. Authorities acted promptly to block further escalation, deploying heavy security around the area.
Congress Slams ED for Targeting Opposition
Reacting sharply, Congress leader Amit Chavda accused the BJP-led government of using central agencies to suppress dissent. “The government is clearly using the ED and CBI to distract citizens from real issues and intimidate the opposition,” Chavda told reporters. “This is a calculated move to stifle democratic voices.”
Imran Pratapgarhi Links ED Action to Upcoming Elections
Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi linked the ED’s move to the BJP’s fear of losing in upcoming state elections. “The BJP knows it’s losing ground in Bihar and Assam. That’s why it’s misusing the ED to harass the Opposition,” he said.
“Just look at the timing—Rahul Gandhi visits Modasa in Gujarat, and suddenly, the ED files a chargesheet. This isn’t coincidence; it’s political strategy.” He added, “The BJP wants to crush the Opposition completely, but it forgets that the Gandhi family has made immense sacrifices for this nation. Congress will not remain silent.”
Sachin Pilot Vows Legal Fight
Congress leader Sachin Pilot also condemned the chargesheet, vowing to fight the case through legal means. “This is nothing but a politically motivated attack,” he said. “We believe in the judicial system and will challenge this legally. The BJP is targeting Sonia and Rahul Gandhi to suppress our voice.”
ED Moves Case to Rouse Avenue Court
On Tuesday, the ED submitted the prosecution complaint at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court. The chargesheet names Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, and others. The court will take up the matter on April 25 to decide whether to proceed with the case.
Congress Plans Statewide Protests Outside ED Offices
In response, Congress announced it would stage demonstrations at ED offices in all districts. The party accused the BJP of orchestrating a coordinated attack through investigative agencies. This case began after BJP leader Subramanian Swamy filed a complaint, alleging financial irregularities involving the National Herald newspaper and Congress-linked firms.
