A tragic train accident shook Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district on Tuesday after a passenger train rammed into a stationary goods train from behind. The collision left at least eight people dead and several others injured.

The accident occurred near Bilaspur station around 4 PM, disrupting rail services and prompting large-scale rescue operations. Authorities suspect that the passenger train may have ignored a signal, leading to the deadly crash.

How the Accident Happened?

The collision took place when the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) passenger train was traveling from Gevra in Korba district to Bilaspur. According to officials, the train hit a stationary goods train near the Bilaspur railway yard. The impact was so strong that several coaches were damaged, and passengers were trapped inside.

Bilaspur district collector Sanjay Agrawal confirmed the toll while speaking to ANI. He said, “A total of eight people have lost their lives in this accident. Two people are still stuck here... 16-17 people are in serious condition. This is a big accident. Everyone is present here and we are carrying out rescue operations.”

Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities, reached the site immediately. Many injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Railway’s Response and Compensation

The Indian Railways has announced compensation for the victims and their families.

  • ₹10 lakh for the next of kin of those who died.
  • ₹5 lakh for those seriously injured.
  • ₹1 lakh for passengers with minor injuries.

Officials said that all available resources were being mobilised for rescue and medical care.

“The railway authorities said all available resources have been mobilised at the site, and necessary measures are being taken to provide medical treatment to the injured,” a statement read.

Preliminary Cause of the Collision

Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao said that the passenger train hit the stationary goods train from behind.

“The engine is in the front coach, and some passengers also sit there. That coach has been damaged…” he said.

Initial reports suggest the passenger train overshot a red signal, which caused the accident.
The Railway Board stated,

“Passing Signal at Danger by MEMU train seems to be the reason in the preliminary assessment by railway authorities.”

The authorities have ordered a detailed inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to determine the exact cause and recommend corrective measures to prevent similar incidents.

Train Services Affected

Following the crash, train movement on the Bilaspur–Katni line was halted. Several express and passenger trains were diverted or cancelled. Technical teams are working to repair damaged tracks and signaling systems.

Officials said the priority is to restore normal rail traffic and ensure the safety of passengers on this busy route.
