AIMPLB spokesperson S Q R Ilyas has urged all Muslim organizations to unite against the government’s proposed reforms to the Waqf system. This comes in response to media reports suggesting that the Centre plans to amend the Waqf Act to improve accountability and transparency in Waqf boards.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi supported the idea of reforms, arguing that it’s necessary to address outdated practices and promote inclusivity. He emphasized that finding a logical solution to long-standing issues is beneficial for both the Waqf system and the country.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the proposed amendments will require Waqf boards to disclose the value of their properties and register them with district collectors. Additionally, the reforms may mandate the inclusion of women in Waqf boards.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has expressed strong opposition to any changes that could alter the legal status of Waqf properties or make it easier for the government to interfere. Ilyas called on both ruling and opposition parties to reject the proposed amendments.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari has requested that any related bill be shared with the Opposition and NDA allies before being presented in Parliament. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned the validity of the reports and suggested that the BJP might be using this issue to divert attention from more pressing national concerns.
