Centre Allocates Rs 944 Crore For Cyclone Fengal Relief In Tamil Nadu, Additional Funds Pending Assessment

On Friday, the Centre sanctioned the release of ₹944. 80 crore to Tamil Nadu as part of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support the state’s relief initiatives in regions affected by Cyclone Fengal.

An official announcement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) verified that the funds would be disbursed in two phases to help Tamil Nadu in offering relief to those impacted by the cyclone on November 30.

The Centre also sent an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to evaluate the destruction in the affected districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The Home Ministry additionally promised that extra funds would be allocated from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) depending on the damage assessment findings from the central team.

Furthermore, the Centre has been supplying logistical aid, which includes NDRF teams and support from the Army and Air Force to states dealing with floods and cyclones.

The Centre also indicated that over ₹21,718. 716 crore has been designated for disaster relief this financial year, comprising ₹14,878. 40 crore from SDRF to 26 states and ₹4,808. 32 crore from NDRF to 18 states.

Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the government persists in aiding states impacted by natural disasters, easing the burdens endured by citizens.

In the meantime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin sought ₹2,000 crore in immediate relief from the NDRF, referencing the significant damage inflicted by Cyclone Fengal. Stalin disclosed that over 69 lakh families and 1. 5 crore individuals in districts such as Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi were severely impacted. The state’s preliminary evaluation indicated a requirement for ₹2,475 crore in recovery efforts.

“Despite our utmost efforts, the magnitude of this disaster has surpassed the state’s resources, and the state requires urgent financial help to address the consequences of this natural disaster,” Stalin expressed in his correspondence.
