CBI Presents 11 Key Evidence Pieces in RG Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case

The CBI’s chargesheet in the Kolkata RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, submitted to the Sealdah court, outlines the sequence of events leading to the crime involving junior doctor’s death. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy is the sole accused mentioned in the 45-page document, which relies on circumstantial evidence and CCTV footage to establish his involvement.

The CBI reconstructed Roy’s movements on August 8, when he and another individual visited a patient at RG Kar Hospital around 2:30 pm. Shortly after, they attempted to deposit cash in a police officer’s account at a nearby bank but were unsuccessful. Later, Roy and his companion returned to their barracks, and by 10:45 pm, they left to buy alcohol and food before visiting a brothel in the Chetla area. Roy did not engage with any sex workers, only consuming alcohol, and both returned to the hospital by 3:20 am.

Roy entered the emergency building and made his way to the seminar room on the fourth floor at 4:03 am on August 9, where the victim was alone and asleep. The chargesheet detailed the “28 minutes of horror” during which the crime occurred, from 4:03 am to 4:31 am. CCTV footage captured Roy entering and leaving the building, and evidence such as headphones, semen, and saliva samples from the victim’s clothing, as well as bloodstains on Roy’s trousers and shoes, further linked him to the crime.

In total, 11 pieces of evidence, including DNA samples, were used to build the case, with additional support from mobile tower data and matching CCTV timestamps. The chargesheet indicates the brutal nature of the attack and the victim’s attempts to resist her assailant.
