The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its Vice Presidential candidate. The announcement drew wide appreciation from BJP leaders and NDA allies. They praised his long experience, integrity, and deep knowledge of parliamentary procedures.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal called the nomination “a very welcome step.” He said, “CP Radhakrishnan is a highly learned person and understands parliamentary decorum. There is full hope that he will bring dignity not only as Vice President but also as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. All of us congratulate him.”
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ghanshyam Tiwari also praised the move. He noted, “CP Radhakrishnan being given this opportunity is a very fortunate matter. He has a lot of experience, so Parliament and Rajya Sabha both will benefit from him.”
From the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti described him as a service-oriented leader. He said, “Radhakrishnan is a highly experienced administrator with vast experience. He is known for his services to society, especially the marginalised sections… He is a very good choice.”
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also congratulated him. In a post on X, he wrote: “Heartfelt congratulations to the Honorable Governor @CPRGuv, who has been selected as the Vice-Presidential candidate of the NDA. This is a crowning achievement for the public service and dedicated social activities of C.P. Radhakrishnan, a senior BJP leader and the Governor of Maharashtra.”
He also thanked PM Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, and senior party leaders for choosing a leader from Tamil Nadu.
The Vice Presidential election is likely to see a contest between the NDA’s nominee and the INDIA bloc’s yet-to-be-announced candidate.
Radhakrishnan has been serving as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra since July 31, 2024. His nomination comes at a time when the NDA holds a clear numerical advantage in Parliament.
The Election Commission announced that polling will take place on September 9, with counting of votes on the same day. The deadline for filing nominations is August 21, while candidates may withdraw until August 25.
The Vice Presidential post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session, due to health reasons.
