Bengal Medical Council Revokes Registration Of Former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh

The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) revoked Dr. Sandip Ghosh’s registration on Thursday, following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a rape-murder case and allegations of financial misconduct.

Dr. Ghosh, who previously served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been removed from the WBMC’s list of Registered Medical Practitioners. The cancellation of his license was executed under several provisions of the Bengal Medical Act, 1914.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal chapter had previously urged the WBMC to revoke Ghosh’s registration. The WBMC issued a show-cause notice to Ghosh on September 7, asking him to explain within three days why his registration should not be cancelled. Ghosh, currently in CBI custody, did not respond to this notice.

Ghosh’s arrest occurred on September 2, alongside police officer Abhijit Mondal, for allegedly tampering with evidence related to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The CBI’s remand note revealed that Ghosh and Mondal were involved in the expedited cremation of the doctor’s body despite the family’s request for a second autopsy.

The IMA had also questioned why Ghosh’s medical registration had not been revoked earlier, given the council’s regulations. They called on WBMC president and TMC MLA Sudipto Roy to act swiftly and set aside any personal connections that might influence the decision.

Additionally, Ghosh and Mondal are accused of delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR) and being “willfully absent” from the crime scene. The trainee doctor’s body was found in a semi-nude state in a seminar room at the hospital.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, is the sole accused in the murder and was arrested shortly after the incident.
