One person was killed and many others were injured in a tragic train derailment near Nergundi Station in Odisha’s Cuttack-Nergundi Railway Section on Sunday, officials confirmed. Victim 23-year-old Suvankar Roy of Alipur, West Bengal, was one of the passengers of the SMVT Bengaluru-Kamakhya AC SF Express (12551) that was on its way from Bengaluru to Guwahati when the accident took place at 11:54 AM.
“We have so far received one body besides some injured passengers. Three teams of doctors have been deployed to attend to the injured passengers,” said Subash Chandra Ray, SCB Medical College and Hospital Administrative Officer.
A team of railways, along with Accident Relief and Medical Relief Trains, was sent to the spot to evaluate the situation and offer help. The reason behind the derailment is yet to be investigated.
Trains Diverted After the Accident
As a result of the derailment, some trains, such as the 12822 Dhauli Express, 12875 Neelachal Express, and 22606 Purulia SF Express, were diverted. Helpline numbers were released by authorities for stranded passengers: 8991124238 (Cuttack) and 8455885999 (Bhubaneswar).

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed concern and assured that authorities were working hard to resume normalcy.
