Auto-Taxi Strike Set to Disrupt Delhi-NCR on August 22-23 as Unions Protest Against App-Based Cab Services

Delhi-NCR is bracing for significant transportation disruptions on August 22 and 23 due to a strike organized by auto and taxi driver unions. The protest, involving more than 15 unions, is directed against app-based cab services such as Ola and Uber, with unions alleging that both central and state governments have failed to ensure adequate compensation for traditional auto and taxi drivers.

The unions claim that despite raising their concerns over several years, no substantial action has been taken to address the issues posed by these app-based services. Kishan Verma, President of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, expressed frustration, stating, “For several years, we have been writing to governments and departments about companies like Ola and Uber, but no one listens. These companies present their side, and the government presents its side, but these businesses operate as a game of donations, with the government also involved. We demand an end to this game.”

Verma emphasized the impact on employment for auto and taxi drivers, arguing that their livelihoods are being threatened by private cab services. He also raised concerns about illegal activities, claiming, “Private Ola and Uber taxis are involved in smuggling, and there is also trade in alcohol and drugs. To address these issues, we are going on strike. The organization has decided that on August 22 and 23, all auto and taxi services in Delhi NCR will be suspended.”

The unions have also called for a ban on app-based cab services, criticizing the increasing number of e-rickshaws and bikes with private number plates operating on the roads. As a result, Delhi-NCR commuters are likely to face significant challenges during the two-day strike.
