Assam Flood Crisis: Death Toll Climbs To 84

The flood situation in Assam’s Nagaon district remains dire, impacting numerous lives as the Brahmaputra River continues to overflow, claiming 84 lives across the state. Local resident Rita Sahani and her family have been displaced for the past 10 days, taking shelter in a makeshift tent on an embankment after their home was submerged.

Rita Sahani expressed her distress, stating, “There is still floodwater inside our house and we cannot go there. We are facing a lot of problems. The rain continues, and we cannot work to earn a living.” Many others in the area, like M Chouhan, echoed similar sentiments, describing the loss of household items and the challenges of living with large families in temporary shelters.

Kalipad Das lamented uncertainty, unsure of when they could return home due to extensive flooding in the area. The flood has affected nearly 14.39 lakh people, with about 79,000 individuals in Nagaon district alone, including over 20,000 children, still grappling with the aftermath. The deluge has submerged 184 villages and inundated 18,231.8 hectares of crop area in Nagaon.

While the flood situation shows marginal improvement, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports ongoing challenges, emphasizing the need for continued relief efforts and support for affected communities.

This year’s flood has tragically claimed 84 lives across Assam, underscoring the urgent need for sustained relief and rehabilitation efforts in the region.
