Assam Flood: Congress Urges Rahul Gandhi To Take Action In Parliament

A team from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), led by its President Bhupen Borah, has taken a significant step to address the persistent issue of Assam Flood. The team submitted a memorandum to the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, urging him to raise this critical issue in Parliament.

Flooding in Assam is a recurring problem, causing immense damage to life, property, and agriculture every year. The Brahmaputra River, which flows through the state, often overflows during the monsoon season, leading to widespread devastation. Historically, Assam has faced this challenge for decades, with the earliest recorded severe flood dating back to the 1950s.

President Bhupen Borah highlighted the urgency of the situation in the memorandum. “The people of Assam suffer year after year due to the devastating floods. We need immediate and effective measures to mitigate this problem,” he stated. The memorandum details the impact of the floods on local communities, including loss of homes, crops, and infrastructure.

A Brief History of Assam’s Floods

Assam’s struggle with floods dates back to ancient times, with records of severe flooding causing widespread destruction. The Brahmaputra River, one of the major rivers in India, plays a central role in these floods. Over the years, various governments have attempted different strategies to control the flooding, but the increasing intensity of the monsoons, possibly linked to climate change, has made the problem more severe. Today, effective flood management in Assam requires innovative and sustainable solutions to protect the state’s future.
