The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed a scuffle on Friday between Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress MLAs amid allegations that a firm affiliated to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife received central subsidies under a Central government scheme.
It was the final day of the Assam legislative assembly’s five-day autumn session, which began on September 11. The Congress MLAs brought up the issue in the legislature and urged that the Speaker discuss it. However, the Speaker refused to debate the matter.
Later, Congress MLAs held placards and walked out of the assembly. Earlier on Wednesday, the Congress accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of assisting his wife’s firm in obtaining a Rs 10 crore subsidy from the national government.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Congress national spokesperson Gourav Vallabh claimed that months after Bharatiya Janata Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister of Assam, his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma’s firm Pride East Entertainments Private Limited received Rs 10 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana in 2019.
