Indian Overseas Congress chairman Sam Pitroda remarked that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi experienced his palm bleeding after shaking hands with around 5,000 people, mainly comprising working-class individuals with calloused skin. This observation emerged in connection with Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming Bharat Nyay Yatra, the subsequent phase of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, slated to commence on January 14. Pitroda’s statement gained traction, with BJP leaders seizing upon it to ridicule the ‘Antiques of the Gandhi family.’
During an interview with a YouTube news channel, Pitroda recalled Rajiv Gandhi’s keenness to engage with the grassroots. “I distinctly remember visiting Rajiv Gandhi with my wife, and we noticed his hands were bleeding. When I inquired, he mentioned shaking hands with at least 5,000 individuals. Wherever he went, handshakes were inevitable. These were predominantly villagers, engaged in strenuous physical labor, resulting in rough skin,” recounted Pitroda. “Our hands aren’t accustomed to such toughness since we don’t engage in manual labor,” remarked the Congress leader.
“Yet, Rajiv Gandhi found immense joy in meeting them, considering it his responsibility even after assuming the role of Prime Minister. The overwhelming response from crowds everywhere was a testament to his connection with the people,” Pitroda added.
Previously, Pitroda faced criticism for his stance on the Ram Mandir’s consecration ceremony, stating that it shouldn’t hold national significance. The party distanced itself from his statement, clarifying it as Pitroda’s personal opinion. In the latest update on the Bharat Nyay Yatra, the Manipur government declined permission to commence the march from Imphal’s Palace grounds. The Congress party stated its intention to seek approval for an alternate starting point in Imphal while ensuring the yatra’s launch in Manipur.
