An Air India flight went beyond the runway of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai on Monday morning, July 21, because of heavy rain and low visibility upon landing.
The plane, AI 2744, an Airbus A320 (VT-TYA), had just landed from Kochi, Kerala, when it went off the runway immediately after landing at 09:27 AM. According to preliminary reports, three tyres burst while landing, and the engine of the aircraft could have been damaged.
Although the runway excursion, the plane safely taxied to the terminal gate. Passengers and flight crew safely exited without suffering any injuries.
In a press release, Air India confirmed the incident and ensured that safety procedures were in place.
"Flight AI2744 from Kochi to Mumbai on 21 July 2025 had heavy rain while landing, leading to a runway excursion on touchdown. The flight taxied to the gate safely, and all crew members and passengers have disembarked safely since then. The aircraft has been grounded for inspection. The safety of passengers and crew is our priority," an Air India spokesperson informed.
The CSMIA airport authority immediately deployed its emergency response teams to handle the situation and clear the runway area.
"One aircraft arriving from Kochi had a runway excursion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai at 09.27 hours on 21 July 2025. The emergency response teams of CSMIA were immediately deployed to handle the runway excursion. The passengers and crew are safe.". There are some minor damages to the airport's main runway - 09/27. To provide continuity of operations, the Secondary Runway 14/32 has been put into operation. At CSMIA, safety is always our top concern," said a CSMIA spokesperson.
Runway 09/27, the airport's main runway, had minor damage in the accident and is under inspection and repair now. To reduce flight disturbances, airport officials have short-term reactivated Secondary Runway 14/32 for arrivals and departures.
Flight operations are going on with minimal hiccups, while the airport strives to completely repair its main runway and resume normal activities.
