AIIMS Takes Proactive Steps to Address Bed Availability and Patient Comfort

In a bid to efficiently manage and utilize Vishram Sadan beds, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has introduced several proactive measures to enhance bed availability and patient comfort.

  • Bed Availability: AIIMS Delhi has over 1500 beds across various facilities. Despite initial reports suggesting full occupancy, sources indicate that approximately 50% of these beds remain unoccupied.
  • Observations by AIIMS Director: M Srinivas, AIIMS Director, personally engaged with individuals reportedly lying in the open at night. It was found that some were not active patients but individuals allegedly taking advantage of free food donations and accommodations.
  • Measures Implemented:
    • Signage highlighting Vishram Sadan availability to be displayed at key locations.
    • Patients and attendants actively guided Vishram Sadan.
    • Real-time dashboard displaying bed availability operational by February 29, 2024.
    • Entry restricted to patients with bed recommendations from the clinical team.
    • Entry and exit points under CCTV surveillance.
    • Increased frequency of electric shuttle service to Vishram Sadans for convenience.
    • Nightly physical verification to ensure occupancy matches records.
  • New Mega Vishram Sadan: AIIMS is actively working on the construction of a new mega Vishram Sadan with approximately 2000 beds at the Ansari Nagar West Campus. National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCC) is leading the project.
  • Requests for Land Allocation: Requests have been sent to governors and chief ministers of neighbouring states for land allocation under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for additional Vishram Sadan. Faculty are encouraged to promote CSR contributions for construction when land is allocated.

These measures aim to address bed availability issues and enhance the overall experience for patients and attendants at AIIMS Delhi.
