Two years after inking an agreement in 2022, India delivered the first batch of Brahmos supersonic missiles to the Philippines on Friday. Marking a major defense export for the country. 

The delivery of the missiles is worth a USD 375 million deal. 

Features of the Missile 

Jointly developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia. This order was for the shore-based variant of an anti-ship cruise missile enjoying the capability of 290 Km range with speed of 2.8 Mach. It can also be launched from various platforms- submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.

What It accomplishes for India? 

For India, this defense order serves as a major milestone.  

It enhances India’s growing stature as a supplier of advanced weapons systems. Will also solidify India-Philippines relations amidst China’s growing military assertiveness in South China Sea. 

Future of the Missile

Moreover, other Southeast Asian nations such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia have also expressed interest in purchasing the cruise missiles, which are currently in advanced stages of negotiation. This interest is also followed by South American country Argentina.
