On Friday, a member of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) said that the act of Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the new Parliament building instead of the President of the country constitutes a ‘breach of democratic principles’, according to N K Premachandran.

“The head of state is none other than the president of India. The President of India is the constitutional head of the country,” he said. So “the parliament building must be inaugurated by the head of state,” he reasoned.

Premachandran noted that the prime minister, speaker, and chief justice are heads of the executive, legislature, and judiciary, respectively, but the head of the state is the president of India.
