Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), voiced her dismay after witnessing a video in which two women in Manipur’s Kangpokpi area were paraded naked. She also expressed concern that this was not an isolated incidence, and that ‘other comparable incidents that had occurred with other ladies in the state as well’.

The DCW chairman lambasted the central government’s approach on the matter, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s failure to visit the state and assess the situation on the ground, as well as his failure to publish a single remark on the ethnic violence in the northeastern state.

“I am unable to sleep after watching the video which has come from Manipur. The incident happened 2.5 months ago but no arrest has been made so far. I am ashamed that no one has been arrested. Central govt is silent, PM has not made a single statement,” Maliwal told news agency.

The two-month-old footage appeared on social media, escalating tensions in the war-torn state. According to reports, a mob of 800-1,000 men allegedly beat three women in a family, gang raped one of them, and killed her brother and father.

Following the incident, the Centre has requested that Twitter remove the video from its platform.

Last month, unnamed armed miscreants were charged with kidnapping, gang rape, and murder. According to the first information report, a family of five escaped to a forest to avoid an armed mob that had entered their community and vandalized properties.

Maliwal further criticized the state’s law and order condition, claiming that the perpetrators of the horrible deed were not apprehended for several days after the FIR was filed. The primary accused, though, who stripped the women naked and paraded them, has finally been arrested.
