In a recent announcement, the International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed that the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) instead of Bangladesh. Despite the change in venue, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will continue to hold the hosting rights for the event.
Tournament Details
The tournament is now scheduled to take place across two venues in the UAE—Dubai and Sharjah—from October 3 to 20, 2024. The decision to move the event came after travel advisories from several participating teams’ governments made it unfeasible to hold the matches in Bangladesh.
ICC’s Statement
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice expressed regret over the change but acknowledged the efforts made by the BCB to host the event in Bangladesh. “It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event,” Allardice said. He thanked the BCB for their efforts and confirmed that they would retain hosting rights for future events.
Appreciation and Future Plans
Allardice also extended gratitude to the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host the tournament on behalf of the BCB. He also recognized Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their offers of support and mentioned that the ICC looks forward to staging global events in those countries in 2026.
The shift to the UAE represents a logistical adjustment due to current global conditions but ensures that the Women’s T20 World Cup will proceed as planned. Cricket fans can anticipate exciting matches in Dubai and Sharjah as the world’s top women’s teams compete for the title.
