Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has stated that he will not apologize for his controversial comments about the “eradication” of Sanatana Dharma. He claims his statements were meant to address oppressive practices towards women and were misinterpreted, leading to the backlash that began in September 2023.
Context of His Remarks
During a recent event, Udhayanidhi emphasized that his views reflect those of prominent Dravidian leaders such as Periyar, former Chief Minister CN Annadurai, and M. Karunanidhi. He highlighted historical injustices faced by women, stating, “Women were not allowed to study. They were unable to leave their homes, and if their husbands died, they would have to die as well. Thanthai Periyar spoke against all of this. I echoed what Periyar, Anna, and Kalaignar said.”
Controversy Erupts
Udhayanidhi sparked significant controversy in September 2023 when he compared Sanatana Dharma to diseases like “dengue” and “malaria,” asserting that it should be eradicated rather than just opposed. Speaking at the ‘Sanatana Abolition Conference,’ he claimed that Sanatana Dharma contradicts social justice and equality. His remarks prompted criticism and protests, especially from BJP and Hindu groups, leading to multiple legal cases against him.
Refusal to Apologize
Udhayanidhi defended his statements, saying, “But my words were twisted. Not just in Tamil Nadu, cases were filed against me in several courts across India. They asked me to apologise, but I stand by what I said. I’m the grandson of Kalaignar, and I will not apologise.” He affirmed his commitment to face the legal challenges ahead.
Allegations of Hindi Imposition
Additionally, Udhayanidhi accused the central government of trying to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu, citing recent changes to the state anthem as evidence. He claimed that certain words were intentionally removed during a Doordarshan Tamil broadcast, igniting further controversy.
He urged new parents to choose beautiful Tamil names for their children, reiterating, “Because many are attempting to impose Hindi in Tamil Nadu. They couldn’t do it directly. That’s why they are omitting a few words from the Tamil Thaai Vaazthu (State song). They are trying to impose Hindi via the new education policy. But they are all failing.”
Political Background
Udhayanidhi, a 46-year-old DMK leader and former state sports minister, was appointed Deputy Chief Minister on September 30. His promotion was reportedly delayed due to the controversy surrounding his comments on Sanatana Dharma.
