Jag Janani Maa Vaishno Devi will be returning to the small screen in a new avatar. Actress Paridhi Sharma tells how she became Maa Vaishno Devi.

Q. Tell us about the show and the big leap.

A. Jag Janani Maa Vaishno Devi: Kahani Mata Rani Ki has enthralled the viewers with its powerful content and an amazing star cast since its launch. It narrates the untold story of Maa Vaishno Devi, from the onset of her journey on earth as a child to how she becomes Maa Vaishno Devi, mother of the entire creation as she is now acknowledged.

Q. Let us know about your character of Maa Vaishno Devi.

A. I will be seen essaying the role of elder Vaishno Devi. As the young princess, Vaishnavi realises her true powers of a goddess and as thus begins her journey to become Maa Vaishno Devi. She makes sure that all sins are diminished in the world. The focus will be on how Vaishno Devi becomes a “Mano Kamnao Ko Puri Karne Vali Mata”.

 Q. What preparations have you done to get into the skin of this character?

A. I have had the opportunity to play a historical character before and am familiar with the responsibility that comes with playing an iconic character. I have always made sure to give my best when it comes to playing such roles. I researched a lot by reading several books on Maa Vaishno Devi and watched a few episodes of the show to get a better understanding of the other characters.

Q. What fascinated you about this show?

A. Well, there’s a saying, “You don’t choose a character; the character chooses you.” When I was offered this role I immediately said yes. I have always been a big devotee of Maa Vaishno Devi and getting to portray her on-screen was a dream come true.

Q. You have entered the show as a replacement for Puja Banerjee who was seen in the initial episodes. What are your views on audience acceptance?

A. We all respect the decision taken by Puja to spend more time with her family. When I was approached, I took it as a blessing from the divine Maa herself. Yes, when you come as a replacement, it takes time for the viewers to accept you but hopefully, I will do justice to the role and the viewers will love and appreciate it.

Q. What all precautions are being taken on the set post Covid-19?

A. We have started shooting again keeping in mind all the new guidelines set by the government and are adhering to social distancing norms. The entire set is sanitised regularly. People have been wearing masks and using sanitisers. Regular temperature check is also being done before entering the set. The makeup artists are wearing PPE. We are not allowed to loiter on the set once the shoot is over.

Q. What are your views on mythological shows?

A. There is a lot to learn from Indian mythology in terms of wit, strength and life lessons that will help you grow as a person. More than that, as Indians these mythologies form our roots regarding values and beliefs and it is important to have the right ones. It will not just entertain the audience but will also educate them about our values and culture.
