The initial glimpse of Christopher Nolan’s highly expected film The Odyssey has been finally out, featuring Matt Damon as Odysseus. Hitting screens on July 17, 2026, the sweeping movie is guaranteed to enthrall people with its power-packed starry cast and path-breaking IMAX technology.
On Monday, the official X (formerly Twitter) account for “Odysseus” announced that Matt Damon had been cast. “Matt Damon is Odysseus,” the caption said, and it featured a photo of Damon in costume. Christopher Nolan’s #TheOdysseyMovie will hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
Among the many talented actors in the cast are Tom Holland, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo.
This action-packed retelling, drawn from Homer’s ageless epic, takes Odysseus on a treacherous quest home from the Trojan War. The ancient poem is still one of the most powerful works in Western literature.
Mythic Action Epic for IMAX
Universal Pictures, which has been a longtime collaborator with Christopher Nolan, will release The Odyssey globally. The movie is billed as a “mythic action epic” and will be shown in IMAX for the first time, bringing Homer’s epic to life in a way never seen before. Production will occur worldwide, with major sequences filmed on Sicily’s Island of Favignana, which is said to be where Odysseus and his men landed in the original story.
Nolan, whose credits include Inception and Dunkirk, not only is directing The Odyssey but also penned the screenplay and is a producer along with his wife, Emma Thomas, through their Syncopy production banner.
A Longstanding Collaboration Between Nolan and Damon
This is the third time that Christopher Nolan and Matt Damon have teamed up. Known for his role in “The Departed,” the actor previously collaborated with Nolan on “Oppenheimer (2023)” as Leslie Groves and “Interstellar (2014).”
The Odyssey promises to be a unique cinematic experience thanks to its outstanding cast, cutting-edge IMAX technology, and director Christopher Nolan’s inventive vision.
