Just days before Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal trial, his lawyer made a shocking statement in court. On May 9, Diddy’s attorney Marc Agnifilo admitted that domestic violence occurred during the rapper’s past relationship with singer Cassie Ventura.
“We are going to take the position that there was mutual violence in their relationship,” Agnifilo told the court. He added, “There was hitting on both sides,” and said this was “relevant in terms of the coercive aspects” of the case.
Case Centers Around Abuse Allegations
Diddy now faces serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The court’s focus has shifted to his past relationship with Cassie. The two dated from 2007 to 2018. Their romance was highly public and often described as troubled.
In November 2023, Cassie filed a lawsuit accusing Diddy of rape. However, they settled the matter privately soon after.

Cassie chose not to take the case to trial. In a public statement, she said, “I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control.” She thanked her “family, fans, and lawyers for their unwavering support.”
Diddy Responds After Video Surfaces
In May 2024, a 2016 hotel surveillance video was released. It showed Diddy assaulting Cassie in a hallway. Soon after, Diddy posted a video on Instagram to address his past behavior.
“I went and I sought out professional help,” he said. “I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day.”
Cassie Shares Her Emotional Journey
Cassie, now married to Alex Fine and expecting their third child, also shared her thoughts. In an emotional Instagram post, she wrote, “It broke me down to someone I never thought I would become.” She added, “With a lot of hard work, I am better today, but I will always be recovering from my past.”
