Chris Evans has put the record straight—he is not returning as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor, who portrayed Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for nearly a decade. He dismissed speculation about his comeback, reaffirming that he is “happily retired.”

Despite rumors fueled by his cameo as Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), Evans remains adamant that his time wielding the iconic shield has ended.

In an interview with Esquire Magazine, Evans addressed the ongoing speculation, stating, “That’s not true. This always happens. It has happened every couple of years ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired.”

The statement follows months of reports.  All hint at his potential return to the MCU, particularly for Avengers: Doomsday.  Additionally, they suggest bringing back several former Marvel stars.

Anthony Mackie Reaction

Anthony Mackie, who inherited the Captain America mantle from Evans in Avengers: Endgame, also weighed in on the rumors. Mackie, currently preparing for his second standalone film in the franchise, Captain America: Brave New World, was reportedly surprised by the speculation.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Mackie said, “I talked to Chris a few weeks ago, and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table. I asked him, and he just said, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.'”

Doomsday’s Plan

Avengers: Doomsday, which is to be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, will reportedly star Robert Downey Jr. as the supervillain Doctor Doom. The movie is going to gather all the present-day superheroes in the MCU and set up an epic battle. The much-awaited blockbuster is expected to hit theaters in 2026.

Since there are hopes in the hearts of fans for him to return, the latest response from the actor suggests that perhaps the story has come to an end at least until now.
