The Accountant 2 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, but the sequel comes with a surprising twist where Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are not the main characters. Speaking during a virtual press conference alongside director Gavin O’Connor and other cast members, Affleck revealed that the true lead of the film is Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s character, Marybeth Medina.
“The secret of this movie is that Cynthia is the protagonist, and she’s the lead in the movie,” he shared. “She is the entrée for the audience, which means we get to play character parts.”
Affleck and Bernthal Step Back
Affleck added that stepping out of the spotlight gave him and Bernthal the freedom to play more dynamic, supporting roles. “There are a whole bunch of expectations and stuff that go with being the lead… That affords Jon and me the luxury of doing the sort of two-hander… odd couple thing.”
Addai-Robinson echoed Affleck’s comments, describing how her role and her confidence have evolved since the 2016 original. “I was nervous. I was kind of out of my depth… And here we are eight years later… I felt like I had also grown.” She added, “These guys are kind of crazy and they’re also kind of challenging my view of how to serve justice.”
