On the occasion of 25 years of Justice Tankha Memorial School, the first Justice Verma Memorial Lecture was held at Manas Bhawan in Jabalpur on Saturday. Addressing the event, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan discussed the importance of the use of mother tongue language in Courts. He said, “Citizens are unable to understand the judgments passed by the courts as 92% of the citizens in Madhya Pradesh do not know English.”
“I ask for our mother tongue to be introduced into the courts, Kannad in Karnataka, Tamil in Tamil Nadu, and Hindi, which is our mother language in Madhya Pradesh,” he added.
In addition, Shivraj said, “I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is extremely proud of his language and speak it throughout the globe and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was the first politician to deliver a speech in Hindi.”
The chief minister of Madhya Pradesh further called for the teaching of engineering and medical disciplines in Hindi in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
Remembering Justice J.S. Verma, Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed, “Justice J.S. Varma is a source of pride in Madhya Pradesh. His landmark verdicts cannot be forgotten and have established how the rule of law is followed. His judgement of 1997 on the Vishakha case has set a benchmark in preventing harassment of women at workplaces and is still followed across the nation.” He added, “ The entire nation will always be grateful for the amendments brought in 2012.”
