Heavy rainfall has struck Himachal Pradesh since late Wednesday, leading to severe cloudbursts in Mandi, Shimla, and Kullu districts. These incidents have caused significant damage, with five fatalities reported and around 50 individuals missing. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, with more rain expected on Friday.

Warnings and Responses

The IMD has issued a flash flood warning for six districts, including Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Chamba, and Sirmaur. Additional Chief Secretary Onkar Chand Sharma has confirmed that alerts for heavy rain are in place until August 2, with further updates anticipated.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has received assurances of support from the Union Home Minister and additional NDRF teams, with BJP Chief Nadda and Congress leaders also offering assistance.

Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Conditions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the situation, directing officials to provide necessary support. The Indian Army has mobilized three rescue columns, including engineers and medical teams, to assist in affected areas.

Rainfall measurements show significant precipitation, with Palampur recording 212 mm and Dharamshala 183.2 mm. The IMD forecasts continued rain across various elevations in Himachal Pradesh.
