The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday gave approval for the conduct of Panchayat elections in Haryana.

As many as 13 petitions have been filed in the high court challenging amendments made by the state government in the Panchayati Raj Act in terms of reservation for women. The state government had decided to provide 50% reservation for the women in Panchayat elections under the new act.

The state government is most likely to conduct the panchayat election in June, sources said.

BJP state president O P Dhankhar said that he welcomes the high court’s decision and the BJP is ready to contest the elections. He further said that the party has suitable and efficient contestants across the state.

The term of village panchayats in Haryana ended on February 23, 2021, and as per the constitutional mandate, the elections have to be conducted within six months from the date of dissolution of the panchayats as provided for in Article 243E of the Constitution and Section 3 of Haryana Panchayati Raj Act, 1994.
