Heavy downpour leads to flood-like situation in states

Heavy rains have thrown life out of gear in some states across the country.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao held a high-level review meeting on Monday regarding the continuous heavy rains in the state. The IMD issued an alert of red, yellow and orange warnings for the state of Telangana. Eight districts in the state have been receiving heavy to extremely heavy rains since Sunday.

The Chief Minister instructed all officials, MLAs and ministers to be on high alert and conduct rescue operations on time if needed. A second flood warning was issued as the water level at Godavari river crossed the 48-foot mark, informed the officials. The officials were also directed to take notice of the same and lay out necessary measures.

MLC Kavitha Kalvakuntla also reviewed the situation in Nizamabad in the wake of heavy rainfall and asked authorities to implement immediate measures to prevent the loss of lives. Kavitha asked the district collector to take up rescue operations in all the flood-prone areas so that there is no loss of life. The MLC also advised to constantly monitor problematic areas such as inland areas, ponds, ditches and bridges in the district.

“Godavari water level reached 48’ on 11 July at 6:10 am. A second warning was issued. The forecast indicated a further rise, all the flood duty officers take action as per the Godavari flood manual,” read the order.

MAHARASHTRA

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited Gadchiroli district on Monday to take stock of the flood situation owing to heavy rainfall in the state.

A flood-like situation occurred in different areas of Gadchiroli district due to incessant rainfall in Maharashtra in the past few days.

Waterlogging and incessant downpours have created a flood-like situation in the Gadchiroli district. Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued in Mumbai for the next few days.

Visuals showed heavy water flow on the roads where people are walking in the Gadchiroli district. It almost looked like an overflowing river.

The India Meteorological Department, in its weather bulletin, noted, “Isolated very heavy rainfall very likely over Gujarat region & Madhya Maharashtra on 09th; Saurashtra & Kutch on 09th & 10th; Marathawada on 09th & 11th; Coastal Karnataka on 12th & 13th; Kerala & Mahe, Konkan & Goa & Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on 09th; Telangana on 10th & 11th; South Interior Karnataka during 09th-11th.”

West Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Vidharbha region and Chhattisgarh will witness similar weather conditions till 13 July.

GUJARAT

A flood-like situation occurred in different areas of the Nadiad, in the Kheda district of Gujarat following heavy rainfall. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to enquire about the dire situation created by the heavy rains.

Gujarat CM gave full details to PM Modi about the heavy rains that have lashed out across the state in the last 48 hours, especially in the South and Central Gujarat region and the situation that has arisen as a result of the same. PM Modi assured that the Central Government would provide all necessary help including NDRF to tackle the situation. Heavy rains also lashed Ahmedabad, leading to a rise in the water level of some rivers causing inundation in various low-lying areas. In view of heavy rains, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided to keep schools and colleges closed in Ahmedabad.

Earlier on Sunday, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel held a meeting on Sunday with District Collectors from the State Emergency Operations Center to review the work being done to deal with the situation arising out of the heavy rains in South Gujarat including Chhotaudepur.

The average rainfall in the last three hours is 114.3 mm. Heavy rains battered various districts including Valsad, Navsari, Tapi and others.
