Punjab University is one of the reputed and towering educational institutions of the country. Thousands of students belonging to several states including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pardesh, and several others are studying in the university. Despite that, Haryana is fighting for its existence in the university to some extent, as the student and the teachers of Haryana are ‘still deprived of their rights and representations’ in several bodies including the senate of the university.
In continuation to this, it is pertinent to mention that there are 90 members in the senate body which is the supreme body and takes the final decisions at the administrative level. Out of these, 36 members will be nominated by the body and the process regarding the same is going on. It is learnt that several leaders of Haryana are the strong claimants for the nominations. The list includes the names of Dushyant Chautala, Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana, his younger brother Digvijay Chautala and Gianchand Gupta.
Regarding this, Sudhir Mehra, assistant professor in the English department of the university said that it’s a welcome step if Dushyant or Digvijay or both get nominated in the senate. “It will help out in raising the issues of students and teachers belonging to Haryana who are still deprived of their rights so far,” he added.
Apart from this, a string of some teachers of the state teaching in Punjab university is leaving no stone unturned to acquire the nomination in the senate. The Vice president of the country is the Chancellor of the university and is the supreme authority to finalise the name of these 36 nominated senate members. It has also come to the light that Professor Rajkumar, the vice-chancellor of the university has been in Delhi for several days to ensure that the maximum number of members are nominated from his faction.
