With the 2024 election just days away, Vice President Kamala Harris is urging Michigan voters to reject former President Trump’s claims of a “rigged” electoral system. Speaking at a Black church in Detroit, Harris called for a rejection of fear-driven tactics and a focus on unity.

A Call for Unity and Trust in Democracy

In a speech at Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ, Harris avoided directly naming Trump but addressed themes central to his campaign. “There are those who seek to deepen division, sow hate, spread fear and cause chaos,” she said, contrasting Trump’s rhetoric with her vision of a nation ready to turn the page on hate and division. Harris encouraged voters not to be swayed by messages suggesting their votes wouldn’t matter.

Standing with Michigan’s Arab American Community

Addressing reporters, Harris acknowledged the concerns of Michigan’s Arab American population over the ongoing U.S.-Israel alliance and the civilian toll in Gaza. She emphasized her commitment to peace, stating, “As president, I will do everything in my power to end the war and bring hostages home.”

Rallying Support in the Heart of the “Blue Wall”

Michigan, alongside Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, is a critical part of the Democratic base. Since Obama’s victories in the region, the state has seen shifting allegiances, making Harris’ engagement there essential. She spent the afternoon connecting with locals at Kuzzo’s Chicken and Waffles and discussing community issues with local leaders at a Black-owned barber shop in Pontiac.

Urging Black Voters to Stay Engaged

With Michigan’s Black voters being a key demographic, Harris has focused on engaging with Black communities, underscoring the importance of their participation in the election. She encouraged voters to reject “distractions” meant to discourage voting, emphasizing that their voices are pivotal.
