Harbhajan Singh, along with the daughter of the former CM of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Misa Bharti, and Rajeev Shukla, vice-president of the BCCI, were sworn in as Rajya Sabha members on Monday including 25 others

Others were Rao Meena, Vijay Sai Reddy, Kheeru Mahto, Shambhala Saran Patel, Ranjeet Ranjan, Maharashtra Majhi, Aditya Prasad, Praful Patel, Imran Pratapgarhi, Sanjay Raut, Sasmit Patra, Sandeep Kumar Pathak, and Vikramjeet Singh Sahani. Randeep Singh Surjewal, P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, R Girl Rajan, S Kalyan Sundaram, KRN Rajesh Kumar, Javed Ali Khan, V Vijendra Prasad, who took oath to be the members of the Rajya Sabha.

The first day of the monsoon session of the parliament observed the oath ceremony of the members where athlete PT Usha (from Kerala) and music composer Ilaiyaraaja (from Tamil Nadu) could not be present in the Rajya Sabha to take the oath for some reason. Thereafter, the obituaries were read for the dignitaries who had demised ecently. Tributes were also given to the former Prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, along with Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ex-UAE president, and President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya.

Former members Kishore Kumar Mohanty, Robert Kharshiing, K K Veerappan, and santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma were also bestowed with obituaries. 

Later, General PC Mody, the secretary of the Rajya Sabha, displayed the bills passed by the Parliament during the two hundred and fifty-sixth session of the Rajya Sabha.

 The session was later adjourned for the entire day for the ruckus created by the opposition party members contributing to the disruption of the session.
