In a significant move towards fostering education among the underprivileged, Governor Banwari Lal Purohit, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Society for the Empowerment of Disadvantaged Talented Youth, distributed scholarships and Certificates of Appreciation amounting to Rs 20 lakh to 300 meritorious students from Class 8th and 10th in Punjab and U.T. Chandigarh. The initiative aimed to recognize and support outstanding students from government schools who demonstrated exemplary academic performance.
The Society, originally established in 2006 by the then Governor of Punjab, became inactive after a few years due to various reasons. Governor Purohit took the proactive step of reviving the Society to continue its mission of empowering talented students from the weaker sections of society.
In a Governing Body meeting, it was decided to award scholarships to students who excelled in the 8th and 10th classes during the academic year 2022-23. A total of 300 students were selected, with 75% from Punjab and 25% from U.T. Chandigarh, ensuring comprehensive reach across the region.
The scholarship distribution ceremony took place at Punjab Raj Bhawan, where Governor Banwari Lal Purohit personally handed out scholarships and Certificates of Merit to the elated recipients.
The total scholarship amount disbursed amounted to Rs. 20 lakhs, making a substantial contribution towards supporting the educational aspirations of disadvantaged talented youth. Each scholarship was accompanied by a Certificate of Merit, personally signed by the Hon’ble Governor, recognizing the students’ exceptional achievements.
In his address during the ceremony, Governor Banwarilal Purohit emphasised the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and encouraged the recipients to continue striving for excellence in their academic pursuits. He also spoke at length about the importance of character building, time management, and developing attributes such as honesty, kindness, empathy, truthfulness, and compassion for fellow beings.
