‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is set to continue its record-breaking run with a renewal for its 21st season, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The upcoming season is expected to feature 18 episodes, a significant increase from the shortened 10-episode 20th season due to strikes.
Meg Marinis has assumed the role of showrunner, succeeding Shonda Rhimes. Marinis, who has been with the series since its third season, climbed the ranks from a writer’s production assistant to executive producer over the years. Rhimes expressed gratitude to the dedicated fan base whose support has propelled the show into its historic 21st season. She praised Marinis’ storytelling prowess and eagerly anticipates the upcoming season under her leadership.
While details about the returning cast remain undisclosed, it’s noted that turnover is typical for ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Ellen Pompeo, who portrays the lead character Meredith Grey, is expected to stay involved despite stepping down as a series regular before the 20th season. Pompeo remains active in the series, providing narration, and serves as an executive producer through her production company, Calamity Jane, in collaboration with ABC Signature.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ holds the distinction of being the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history, surpassing ER in 2019. Additionally, it is the longest-running primetime scripted series in ABC’s history. The show’s extensive catalog of episodes recently became available on Hulu and Netflix, introducing it to a new generation of viewers.
The renewal of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ adds to ABC’s early lineup for the 2024-25 broadcast season, joining the likes of ‘Abbott Elementary’ and ‘911’ in securing future airtime.
