The Beatles and the Rolling Stones both took home prestigious Grammy Awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles. The Beatles won Best Rock Performance for their final song, “Now and Then,” created from a demo by John Lennon. Meanwhile, the Rolling Stones were awarded Best Rock Album for Hackney Diamonds, their 2023 comeback album.

Premiere Ceremony Kicks Off the Event

The awards were presented during the “premiere ceremony,” which takes place before the main event at 5 pm in Los Angeles (1 am in London). Other winners included Sabrina Carpenter, who claimed Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit “Espresso,” and Charli XCX, who earned three awards, including Best Dance/Pop Album for Brat.

A Powerful Tribute to the LA Wildfires

The ceremony began with a heartfelt performance of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Yolanda Adams and Angelique Kidjo performed a gospel-infused version dedicated to the victims of the LA Wildfires. The tribute also honored the first responders who fought the fire to protect vulnerable communities.

Music’s Power to Unite

Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. addressed the audience, emphasizing the role of music to inspire, heal, and unite. He also acknowledged the resilience of the Los Angeles community following the recent fires, celebrating the strength of first responders.

Beyoncé was a major contender with 11 nominations for her album Cowboy Carter. She won Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for her duet with Miley Cyrus, “II Most Wanted.” However, Kacey Musgraves won Best Country Song for her track “The Architect.” Musgraves reflected, “There’s so much darkness in the world right now, and it just feels so good to be able to fight some of that darkness through song.”

Album of the Year: Strong Competition

This year’s nominees for Album of the Year included Billie Eilish, Beyoncé (who has yet to win the category), Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and André 3000, nominated for New Blue Sun. Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter were also up for Best Album. Fans speculated whether their early wins would increase their chances of taking home the biggest prize of the night.

Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter Win Early Awards

Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter weren’t present to collect their awards, as they were scheduled to perform later in the evening. Charli’s producer, Finn Keane, accepted the award for Best Dance/Pop Single on her behalf. He praised her work, saying, “She has been making this kind of music for 10 years, but everyone’s just caught up to it.”

Sean Ono Lennon Accepts Award on Behalf of The Beatles

John Lennon’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, accepted the Beatles’ award, calling the band “the greatest band of all time.” He urged the audience to “play the Beatles’ music to your kids,” adding, “We need peace and love, and we need the magic of the ’60s to stay alive.”
