Back in 1993, long before social media could blow up a moment, one Bollywood song managed to spark national outrage, light up drawing-room debates, and still become a runaway musical hit. The song? “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” from Khalnayak. The controversy? As bold as the question the lyrics posed. But tucked inside all the noise, there was one face that carried quiet intensity—Neena Gupta.
While the song’s spotlight belonged to Madhuri Dixit’s energetic performance, Neena Gupta’s presence in the sequence didn’t go unnoticed. Dressed in a bright, traditional ensemble, her expressive gaze and grounded screen presence added a layer of raw realism to a song otherwise draped in spectacle.
“I had just gone to shoot for a day. I didn’t sing it, and I didn’t choreograph it. But it became one of the most iconic things I’ve done,” she recalled in a recent interview. The song itself is so iconic that it was recreated for the film 'Crew' in the year 2024, starring Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon.
Penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, the song fused folk rhythms with suggestive lyrics—"What’s behind the blouse?" —a question that was meant to be metaphorical but landed like a grenade.
Parliamentarians raised objections. Women’s groups filed complaints. Editorials questioned the moral compass of Bollywood. And yet, away from the furore, music stores across the country couldn’t stock enough cassettes. By conservative estimates, over 1 crore cassettes of “Choli Ke Peeche” were sold, making it one of the most commercially successful Bollywood songs of its time.

Neena Gupta has always walked her own path in the industry, whether it was raising her daughter Masaba at the age of 36 without getting married in the public eye or taking on roles that others would shy away from. In Subhas Ghai's Khalnayak, she wasn’t the central character, but she sure stood out.
The film starring Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, and Jackie Shroff was a commercial success, but it was the song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai, performed by Madhuri Dixit and Neena, that truly captured the nation's attention. There was no gimmickry in her performance, just presence. And maybe that’s what made the moment so memorable. For many, Gupta represented the bridge between the tradition the film referenced and the disruption it created.
Even as the backlash around the song grew, the numbers told a different story. People were buying it. Replaying it. Talking about it. What was condemned in public often found appreciation in private. And in that contradiction, “Choli Ke Peeche” found its place in Bollywood history, not just as a song, but as a cultural moment.
Years later, Gupta continues to be celebrated for her bold choices, whether in Badhaai Ho, her memoir Sach Kahun Toh, or the hit Netflix series Masaba Masaba. And yet, her short role in that song remains a chapter often revisited, sometimes debated, and often admired.
