Dhadak 2, starring Tripti Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi is a remake of 'Periyerum Perumal'
'Dhadak', released in 2018 starring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter captured the audience with its strong storyline and take on society. Produced by Dharma Productions, Karan Johar has turned it into a franchise. The upcoming film 'Dhadak 2' has been released on the big screen on August 1. The new installment stars Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi.
Although it has a different storyline, the two share some similarities.
Both the films are focused on love stories with societal differences. In simpler terms, they throw light on relationships that are not celebrated by the society due to its norms and classicism.
Just how Dhadak was a remake of Marathi superhit 'Sairat, 'Dhadak 2' is a Hindi adaptation of the Tamil blockbuster 'Pariyerum Perumal', released in 2018.
Pariyerum Perumal, directed by Mari Selvaraj circles around a man from marginalized caste from Tamil Nadu named Pariyan. He dreams of becoming a lawyer and idolizes Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Story takes pace as he joins a college where he meets Jothi, an upper caste girl. As their friendship grows, Jothi develops feeling for him and that's when the drama starts! Jothi's family filled with pride feels their daughter might elope with this man and would ruin the reputation of family in the society.
The film is not just a love story but dives deeply into the issue ofcaste-based discrimination. 'Pariyerum Perumal' revolves around Periyan's journey of facing issues in the society just because of his lower societal status.
Interestingly, the film was inspired by a mix of short stories and a serial written by Selvaraj. Producer Pa Ranjith, known for weaving political commentary into his work, also shared that the female character Jothi drew inspiration from Shweta Tripathi’s ‘Shaalu’ in Masaan. Upon its release, the film was hailed as “an artistic masterpiece” and was praised for revealing the harsh socio-political fabric of India.
From what we gather from the trailer and the music of the film, it seems like it is oriented on the romantic angle more than the sustaining issue of caste discrimination in the society.
Fans who believed that 'Dhadak' could not reach the actual depth of 'Sairat' might have a similar opinion about 'Dhadak 2'. The loyal fanbase of the original films which put the spotlight on society, class, and injustice might not be very fond of the romantic takeover in the film again.
It remains to be seen whether Dhadak 2 will retain the raw impact of Pariyerum Perumal or reinterpret it for a mainstream Hindi-speaking audience. Considering that the ending of Dhadak was altered from Sairat, viewers are curious whether the second installment will also take creative liberties.
before watching 'Dhadak 2', those who want to watch the original hit can use Amazon Prime to access it. The original movie will give a clear viewpoint of how well Karan Johar has interpreted it. It will allow the viewers to judge the emotional gravity in bith the films and how they are varied.
