Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone will not be returning for the sequel of the 2024 sci-fi blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas. This was officially confirmed by the production house, Vyjayanthi Movies, in a social media statement. The announcement cited an inability to "find a partnership" and highlighted that a project of this scale requires full "commitment" from its actors.
Reasons for Departure
Several factors reportedly contributed to Deepika’s decision to exit:
-
Reduced Role: Her part in the sequel was allegedly reduced to a cameo, which may have influenced her choice to step away.
-
Scheduling Conflicts & Demands: Reports indicate clashes with her schedule and additional demands from her team, including a 25% fee hike and fixed eight-hour work shifts. Production may not have been able to accommodate these changes. This is not the first time such issues have arisen, as she was also recently replaced in another Prabhas-starrer, Spirit.
Vyjayanthi Movies’ statement hinted at issues of commitment, while director Nag Ashwin shared a cryptic post on social media: “You can't change what happened but you can choose what happens next.”
Confirmation of Role in Shah Rukh Khan’s King
Shortly after her Kalki exit, Deepika confirmed her role in Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film, King. She posted a close-up photo holding SRK’s hand on Instagram, along with a heartfelt caption:
"The very first lesson he taught me almost 18 years ago while filming Om Shanti Om was that the experience of making a movie, and the people you make it with, matter far more than its success. I couldn't agree more and have applied that learning to every decision I've made since. And that's probably why we're back making our 6th movie together?"
She also included the hashtags #King and #Day1.
King marks Deepika and Shah Rukh Khan’s sixth collaboration, following box office hits such as Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Pathaan, and Jawan. Despite Deepika’s departure, the Kalki 2898 AD sequel is progressing with Prabhas. The makers are expected to share updates on casting soon, with fans speculating about potential replacements and storyline adjustments. Meanwhile, Deepika has already started work on King and remains committed to another upcoming project with Allu Arjun, directed by Atlee.
Fan and Media Reactions
Fans and media widely interpreted the post as a graceful and subtle response to the controversy surrounding her Kalki exit. Many praised her professionalism and her emphasis on positive work environments.
