Kishori Lal Sharma, the newly elected Congress MP from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, visited Delhi to meet top Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi. Sharma, who defeated BJP’s Smriti Irani, shared that he submitted Rahul Gandhi’s winning certificate and sought blessings from Sonia Gandhi.
During his meeting, Sharma received advice from the Gandhis, emphasizing the importance of humility despite his newfound status as an MP. They instructed him to treat everyone with respect, urging him to remain grounded in his approach.
“Jaise humble ho, waise hi humble rehna hai. Koi ghamand nahi karna hai ki aap MP ho gye ho (be humble as you are. Don’t be arrogant about being an MP),” Sharma said the Gandhis told him.
Sharma reflected on his victory over Smriti Irani, emphasizing that there is no place for “revenge” in politics. He likened the electoral process to sportsmanship, where wins and losses are part and parcel.
Sharma secured a notable victory over Smriti Irani by a margin of 1,67,196 votes. He garnered 5,39,228 votes compared to Irani’s 3,72,032 votes. Irani herself gained national attention in 2014 after defeating Rahul Gandhi in Amethi.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra extended her congratulations to Sharma, expressing confidence in his victory from the outset. She praised his dedication and assuredness in securing the Amethi seat for the Congress party.
“Kishori bhaiya, I never had any doubts, I was sure from the beginning that you would win. Hearty congratulations to you and my dear brothers and sisters of Amethi!” Priyanka Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X.
