Indian High Commission in the Maldives responds to a fire incident in Male City, confirming no casualties.

Following a fire that broke out in Male City, the Indian High Commission in the Maldives confirmed that no loss of life or serious injuries were reported. The fire occurred in a building housing a cafe, and Indian nationals affected by the incident are being provided with necessary support by the High Commission.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian High Commission expressed its sadness over the incident and thanked Maldivian authorities for their swift rescue and relief operations. “HCI expresses sadness on the unfortunate incident of fire in a building in Male City on Sep 9. Noted no loss of life or serious injuries. We thank Maldivian authorities for their rescue & relief efforts. We are in touch with affected Indian nationals to provide requisite support,” read the statement.

The fire originated in the kitchen of Gaamagu Cafe, located on Sosun Magu. According to local reports from The Edition, the blaze affected a man and a woman who were exposed to smoke while walking near the site. Both were taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire started on the first floor of the three-story cafe, which is constructed out of corrugated steel sheets. While no major injuries occurred, the adjacent building and surrounding homes were impacted by the blaze, leading to evacuations. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) responded to the fire promptly, bringing it under control.

The cafe, run by expatriates, occupies the ground floor of the building, while the upper floors are used as residential space. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage.

As relief efforts continue, the Indian High Commission remains in close contact with affected Indian nationals to ensure they receive adequate assistance and support.
