The second day of the G20 summit, which is being held in New Delhi under the leadership of India, will follow a fruitful first day. The leaders of the G20 met at Raj Ghat in Delhi to lay wreaths at Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi to begin the second day of the summit. At the wreath-laying ceremony, a musical tribute was also performed, featuring Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite hymns.
The leaders will proceed to the South Plaza of the Bharat Mandapam, where a tree-planting ceremony will be held. The third session of the G20 summit, titled “One Future,” will then take place at Bharat Mandapam. On the second day of the summit, a G20 exhibition will be held for the spouses of world leaders. The Delhi Declaration was adopted earlier on Saturday. It urged nations to uphold international law, including the multilateral system that protects peace and stability as well as territorial integrity and international humanitarian law.
The declaration envisions a green development pact for a sustainable future and supports, among other things, the Deccan principles on food security and nutrition as well as high-level principles on lifestyle for sustainable development and voluntary hydrogen principles. The biggest takeaway from the declaration was that all 83 of its paragraphs were approved by a vote of 100% consensus, with China and Russia joining in. The declaration was the first to do so without a footnote or Chair’s Summary.
At the G20 summit on Saturday, the African Union was admitted as a new permanent member, giving developing countries a bigger voice in international policy-making. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced the launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance in the presence of US Vice President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio, Argentinean President Alberto Fernández, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
One of India’s priorities for the G20 Presidency is the Global Biofuel Alliance. Leading biofuel producers and consumers Brazil, India, and the United States will collaborate over the coming months to create a Global Biofuels Alliance with other interested nations. Day 1 of the summit saw the launch of a massive shipping and rail connectivity corridor between India, the Middle East, and Europe, which was announced by India, the US, Saudi Arabia, and the European Union.
