While the weatherman has predicted erratic weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir till March 15, in the past two days there have been incessant rains lashing plains of the state, with heavy snowfall being reported from North Kashmir.

Due to the rains, mudslides have closed the Srinagar-Jammu highway again and vehicles have been stranded enroute. Traffic officials in Srinagar on Friday afternoon said that it is unlikely to restore the road as the continuous rains are bringing shooting stones and mud on many stretches of the road.

According to the reports from North Kashmir, Baramulla and Kupwara districts witnessed heavy snowfall. The MET department officials said that in Gulmarg at least 13 inches of fresh snow have accumulated while the night temperatures dropped to minus 2.4 degree celsius.

Similarly the MET official said that in Kupwara, Keran and other higher reaches of North Kashmir 2 to 2.5 ft of fresh snow has been received by these areas.

The closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway has added the problems of the common people with the shortage of essential commodities. Heavy rains have also submerged dozens of localities in Srinagar city including many by lanes and connecting roads.

The MET officials have said that the inclement weather will continue in Kashmir valley and other parts of Jammu region and have predicted improvement in the situation from March 16.
