Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was granted bail by a Sealdah court on Friday. Alongside Ghosh, Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, also received bail. The court’s decision came after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a chargesheet within the mandated 90-day period.
The RG Kar case gained notoriety when a trainee doctor was discovered dead in the chest department auditorium on August 10. It was alleged that she had been raped and murdered by a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, during the night of August 9-10. Ghosh faced scrutiny in the case for his alleged delay in the investigation.
In a related development, senior lawyer Vrinda Grover announced that she would no longer represent the family of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder victim.
Additionally, the Calcutta High Court has ordered an investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure. He served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until September 2023. Although he was transferred from RG Kar in October last year, he returned to the position within a month under unclear circumstances. Following his resignation in August this year, he was briefly appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital but was subsequently placed on indefinite leave due to the High Court’s objections and widespread protests.
