Daim Zainuddin, the former Malaysian Finance Minister, passed away early Wednesday at the age of 86, his lawyer confirmed. Daim, who served as finance minister from 1984 to 1991 and again from 1999 to 2001 under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, was a close ally of the veteran leader.

His lawyer, Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed the news to Reuters, stating that Daim had been in the intensive care unit after suffering a stroke in recent weeks. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Earlier this year, Daim faced charges of failing to disclose assets under Malaysia’s anti-corruption laws, one of the highest-profile cases involving prominent figures in the country. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges. Daim’s funeral will take place on Wednesday.
