Panipuri With Shawarma: A Nightmare For Foodies

There’s no shortage of unconventional food items, and Panipuri, also known as Golgappe, often finds itself subjected to these unusual experiments. Despite its popularity across cities, food enthusiasts are generally resistant to new flavors being added to this traditional dish. However, another peculiar creation has emerged: “Pani Puri Shawarma.”

If you’re a fan of either of these dishes, consider this a fair warning.

A user named Mohammed Futurewala shared a video of panipuri shawarma on a microblogging platform. According to the post, a panipuri vendor in Surat is selling this unique dish by creatively blending the two cuisines. In the video, the vendor starts by preparing the stuffing with shredded chicken pieces, salad, potato fries, and sauces. He then stuffs it inside the puris and tops it with chutney, ketchup, and a generous amount of cheese.

In the caption, the user humorously remarked that the vendor concocted the “unique and delectable” panipuri shawarma after his trip to Turkey. He also mentioned that the dish has become quite a sensation in the area, attracting food enthusiasts from nearby and far. Meanwhile, the video, which has now gone viral, has left social media users divided. While some praised the dish, many found it off-putting.

One user commented, “We need to reduce our milk production. Cheese block comes out at every small thing,” while another expressed, “The part where he topped panipuri with that mayonnaise ‘chutney’ is where I couldn’t continue watching the rest of it.”

“These street food vendors are overly obsessed with cheese,” chimed in a third user. Another comment read, “Actually, it’s not bad at all! When dosa can be experimented with in so many ways, I think poori too should be open to experiments.” The video has garnered nearly 3 lakh views so far.

With many more such examples on the internet, it seems like people never tire of experimenting with our beloved panipuri. Earlier, “gold and silver” panipuri went viral from the tech hub of India, i.e., Bengaluru. Served in a gold-colored tray, the puris are filled with dry fruits and honey, dipped in thandai, and then layered with edible gold and silver sheets.
