You can go to the most expensive restaurants in the world and experience some of the most exquisite dishes, but they can never match the satisfaction that 'mummy ke haath ke daal chaawal' brings. The hostelliers and those living far from home could understand this sentiment.
There are times when you just cannot find your way home due to hectic schedules, work commitments, and whatnot! So, next time when you are away from your home, try this simple recipe of toor dal and rice and put your cravings to rest.
Ingredients:
For Dal
For Tadka:
For Jeera Rice:
Method:
For Toor Dal:
Step 1: Wash toor dal thoroughly and soak for 20 minutes.
Step 2: In a pressure cooker, add dal, turmeric, salt, and water.
Step 3: Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles until soft. Mash lightly.
For Tadka:
Step 1: Heat ghee in a pan.
Step 2: Add onions and sauté till golden brown.
Step 3: Add tomatoes, green chilies, red chili powder, and coriander powder.
Step 4: Cook till tomatoes turn soft and the masala releases oil.
Mixing Dal and Tadka:
Step 1: Add the cooked dal to the masala.
Step 2: Mix well and adjust consistency with water.
Step 3: Simmer for 5-7 minutes on low flame.
Step 4: Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a small pan.
Step 5: Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, dry red chili, curry leaves, and garlic.
Step 6: Let them crackle and turn aromatic.
Step 7: Pour the tadka over the simmering dal.
Step 8: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
For Jeera Rice:
Step 1: Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add cumin seeds and sauté. Add water and warm slightly.
Step 2: Add washed rice and salt, close the lid, and cook for 1 whistle.
The final and most important step is to put 2 scoops of rice in a plate, religiously pour the dal on top of it and enjoy! You can pair the dish with some salad, lemon, pickle or green chili chutney for a bomb taste.
