NEW DELHI

Yoga proponent Baba Ramdev, on Wednesday, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a stay of proceedings in multiple FIRs lodged against him in various states for his alleged remarks against allopathy terming it to be ineffective against Covid-19.

Ramdev also sought protection from coercive actions and stay of proceedings in FIRs lodged by Indian Medical Association’s Patna and Raipur branches.

The cases against Baba Ramdev were registered after a complaint was filed by the Chhattisgarh and Bihar unit of the IMA.

Raipur Police has registered an FIR against Baba Ramdev for allegedly spreading “false” information about the medicines being used by the medical fraternity for the treatment of Covid-19.

He has been booked under Sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and other provisions of Disaster Management Act, 2005.

In a video that was widely shared on social media, Baba Ramdev is heard saying at a recent event, “Lakhs of people have died because of allopathic medicines, far more than those who died because they did not get treatment or oxygen.” He also allegedly called allopathy a “stupid and bankrupt” science. The Sunday Guardian, however, cannot independently verify the authenticity of the video.

The IMA had earlier said the Union Health Ministry should take action and prosecute Baba Ramdev under the Epidemic Diseases Act. “Union Health Minister either accepts the accusation and dissolve modern medical facility or prosecute him and book him under Epidemic Diseases Act,” it said.
