As tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, with significant developments such as Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah emphasized the urgent need for global peace. In a statement on Wednesday, Abdullah expressed his hope that world powers would prevent the outbreak of a third world war. He lamented the ongoing loss of life in conflicts like the Israel-Iran confrontation and the Russia-Ukraine war, calling for a restoration of humanity. Abdullah’s comments came at a time when the international community is closely monitoring the Middle East, particularly the deadly conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has forced thousands of civilians to flee southern Lebanon amid Israeli airstrikes.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also voiced concerns about the safety of Indian nationals in the region. Kejriwal urged the Indian government to prioritize the repatriation of citizens from the conflict zones in Iran and Israel, as many Indian families have expressed worry about their loved ones’ safety.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh highlighted the humanitarian toll these conflicts have taken, drawing attention to the United Nations’ observation of Gandhi’s birth anniversary as the International Day of Non-Violence. He called for peace and dialogue to break the ongoing cycle of violence, a sentiment echoed by many global leaders.

As tensions flare in the Middle East, Jammu and Kashmir’s political scene is also heating up ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections. Farooq Abdullah has expressed strong confidence in his party’s alliance with Congress, affirming that the National Conference-Congress coalition is well-positioned to secure a majority across all 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir. This pre-poll alliance, finalized in August, is part of a larger strategy to restore democratic governance in the region after a prolonged period without elected representation. Abdullah has also been vocal about his demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood, a key issue that resonates with many voters as they head to the polls.

The upcoming elections results will be a significant test for the NC-Congress alliance as they face off against other political forces in a bid to secure control of the region’s governance. The results of this election could have far-reaching implications for Jammu and Kashmir’s future, especially concerning its political autonomy and development.
